Enforcing the law

Over the loud speaker I heard, “Driver… exit the vehicle with your hands up now… Driver! Exit the vehicle now!”

I could not see anything but lights flashing and shining upon me from different directions. I was asleep in the parking lot of my gym until I heard the officer. I only had my shorts on and decided to get fully dressed before exiting the vehicle. I did not want to get gun down, so I lifted my shirt and held it towards the passenger side window. I did the motion slowly. Then showed my sneakers and put them on. After I dressed, I grabbed the car keys, exited the vehicle, locked the RAV4 and put the keys in my front pocket.

“Driver, turn around, put your hands up and walk backwards towards the sound of my voice.” I complied. As I walked, I saw red dots on the ground which was from the lasers of their weapons. My life was in the hands of these officers and death at my door. A very traumatic experience awaking the realization of the value of my life. I felt less than I was. I felt powerless followed by violence. There was a part of me that wanted to challenge all the officers and not comply. Sounds crazy; however, there is nothing crazy about rage. Rage is a natural response to an event that requires such action.

I decided instead to fight the case in the courts instead of the streets. It brings tears to my eyes reliving the experience and realizing I will be killed, if I do not comply. So much for living in a free land of America where your freedom can be temporary with a single claim or alleged reported crime. I survived the event but my mind relives it from different perspectives leaving me with the feeling of being battered. Though the event happened one time in history; it is alive in me and has found a home in my soul.
